6b - Centenary Procession 1931

To mark the centenary of the foundation of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831, the Sisters of the Parramatta Congregation celebrated with a large procession through the local streets. Beneath a banner of their founder, Catherine McAuley, and clad in their white woollen church cloaks reserved for solemn occasions, the Sisters pass the Marist Brothers’ school and monastery which stood on the site of the present St Patrick’s Cathedral. University graduate ex-students walk ahead. Men wearing the green sash of the Hibernian Society form a guard of honour.
